Whasanian Bazaar Brings English Learning to Life with Ice Cream Treats

Whasanian School’s vibrant annual Whasanian Bazaar kicked off on May 7, 2026

Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San’s vibrant annual Whasanian Bazaar kicked off on 7 May 2026, transforming the campus into a bustling hub of activity that successfully blended fun, commerce, and practical English language application. Organized by the English Department of Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School, the event drew enthusiastic participation from students and staff alike. The highlight was the innovative Career Academy, where students put their classroom English skills into real-world practice.

Preparations for the bazaar began well in advance. In February, Form 4 students completed a portfolio project in their English lessons in which they learned how to run a business. Through this project, they developed business concepts, learnt different types of English business writing, designed creative products, planned marketing strategies, and prepared promotional materials for their Career Academy booths. This hands-on learning experience allowed them to apply business-related vocabulary and communication skills in an authentic and meaningful context.

Class teachers played a crucial supporting role from the outset. On the morning before the bazaar began, they collected event materials from the General Office counter, including tokens and stamp tickets for distribution to their respective classes. Each student received a total of $100 in tokens, thoughtfully packaged as one $50 note, two $20 notes, and one $10 note. These tokens served as the official currency of the bazaar, allowing students to participate actively in both earning and spending activities throughout the event.

Students are encouraged to visit different professional-themed booths, where they complete practical tasks that simulate real workplace scenarios.

During the bazaar, students could use their tokens to “purchase” the products designed by the Form 4 students at the Career Academy booths. At the same time, they could also “earn” additional tokens by visiting different professionally themed English booths and completing practical English tasks that simulated real workplace scenarios. This interactive system of earning and spending tokens encouraged active participation while reinforcing language skills in an engaging and realistic setting.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to apply English in a fun, practical setting,

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to apply English in a fun, practical setting,” said Miss Lam Wing Sum, the English Panel Chairperson. “By stepping into different career roles at the booths, they build confidence in speaking, listening, and problem-solving — skills that go far beyond examinations.” The initiative was particularly praised for making language learning relevant and enjoyable, with many students actively engaging rather than passively observing.

The bazaar spirit extended beyond students. Extra tokens were placed on top of the water dispensers for staff members who wished to support the young entrepreneurs at the student-run booths. Teachers and staff were warmly encouraged to visit the stalls, interact with students, and offer encouragement. Their presence not only boosted student morale but also fostered meaningful cross-community interaction within the school.

Adding to the excitement were attractive prizes for active participants, highlighted by the Ice Cream Day collaboration held on 11 May 2026. On that day, the iconic Mobile Softee van parked in the school car park starting at 12:20 p.m., offering refreshing soft-serve ice cream cones to students and staff. Active participants stood a chance to receive these delicious ice cream treats as special rewards, making the learning experience even sweeter. In addition, students could win the English Department’s exclusive newly designed school folders, available in two classic styles beloved by students and teachers: Single Line Paper and Chinese Grid Paper. The combination of meaningful English learning and delightful rewards created a joyful atmosphere that further motivated students to participate wholeheartedly.

The Whasanian Bazaar 2026 stands as a shining example of how schools can innovate to make learning relevant and exciting. By integrating language skills with entrepreneurship and hands-on experiences, the English Department created an event that students will remember long after the final token is spent and the last ice cream cone is enjoyed.

With its perfect mix of education and entrepreneurship, this year’s Whasanian Bazaar once again proved that learning English can be both meaningful and delicious.
